The young job seeker.

One of the reasons that we have unemployment in South Africa is because of the fact that unions make it difficult for cheaper (read the young unemployed youth) labour to enter the job market. It is illegal for companies to pay these persons below the minimum agreed rate. The solution for a young person to get a job and experience is to find employers that do feel that they should be held to agreements that they were not part of. These employers often operate on the fringes of the formal sector. They often are part of what is referred to as the unrecorded sector. This means that they also often do not have insurance in the case of an accident, they will expect you to do overtime work for which you will not be paid extra, not abide to labour and other legislation that are designed to protect you. So you have to rely on your own personal negotiation skills and your ability to build on personal relationship to get the best deal possible. This may not be easy in the beginning, but as you become a more valuable employee you will see that your ability to negotiate abetter deal will improve. Remember you always can say no and vote with your feet if you not happy with the way that you are treated. This may also be difficult especially if you do not have a vast array of skills to offer a next employer. The key therefore is to learn as much as fast as you can!
