Bursaries

http://www.sowetanlive.co.za/helpline/2013/01/03/how-to-pay-your-tertiary-fees No need to panic because there are bursaries and other schemes to help you. Those who want to train as teachers can apply to the Department of Basic Education's Fundza Lushaka Bursary Scheme. New applications close at the end of the month and must only be made once a student has been accepted at a university. It is only awarded to South Africans. The National Skills Fund offers bursaries. It also provides funding to various projects across the country to train the unemployed. The National Financial Student Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides funding to students from poor and working class households. Department of Higher Education's Vuyelwa Qinga said: "Those who get admitted to FET colleges and can prove they are from poor backgrounds, will not pay college or tuition fees." Students who qualify for financial assistance should be enrolled at an FET college or for an undergraduate certificate, diploma or degree at a university. "They should be in financial need and from a household with a combined income of less than R122000-a-year and demonstrate potential for academic success," she said. NSFAS loans are only repaid once the beneficiary starts working and earns more than R30000 a year.
